Types of Eye Infection

Eye infections are one of the most common infections. It can be caused due to harmful bacteria, virus or fungi infection. The most common symptoms of an eye infection are red eyes, pain, eye discharge, watery eyes, dry eyes, light sensitivity, swelling around eyes, itching, and blurry vision.

After diagnosing the type of eye infection you are suffering from, the doctor may prescribe you with proper antibiotics in the form of eye drops or medicines. In order to receive proper treatment, you must learn the various types of eye infections.

Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is considered as the most common type of eye infection. This occurs at least once in every individual’s life at a certain point. The other name for conjunctivitis is pink eyes, as this infection causes redness of the eyes. Conjunctivitis is caused due to an infection in the blood vessels in the conjunctiva, which is the outermost thin membrane that surrounds the eyeball. Another cause of this infection is exposure of eyes to several chemicals.

Keratitis
Keratitis, another eye infection, occurs when there is an infection in your cornea. One can experience swelling of the cornea. This infection is either caused due to bacteria or fungi or an eye injury, but it is not contagious.

Endophthalmitis
Endophthalmitis causes inflammation inside the eyes. This infection is one of the chronic eye infections due to which one can lose their vision permanently if not consulted with a doctor immediately. This eye infection is caused due to the infection of bacteria or fungus. The treatment for this infection depends on the severity and the cause of the infection.

Blepharitis
Blepharitis is one of the types of eye infections which causes inflammation of the eyelids. The cause of this infection is generally due to the clogging of the oil glands in the skin of the eyelids. It can be caused due to bacterial infection. There are various eye drops and antibiotic medications that are prescribed when you have this type of infection.

Uveitis
There is a central layer of the eyeball known as uvea, which transports blood to the retina. However, when your uvea gets infected, it could lead to serious repercussions. Uveitis is caused due to eye injuries or viral infections of the eyes. This eye infection can be treated through eye drops, injections or oral antibiotics.

Ocular Herpes
When your eyes are infected by the herpes simplex virus, it is known as Ocular Herpes. This infection is contagious and spreads to anyone who is in direct contact with the infected person. This eye infection is treated with the help of antibiotics or eye drops.
