Common Types of Dog Food Allergies

Common Types of Dog Food Allergies

Is your dog suffering from symptoms such as itchy skin, ear infections or constant licking? If so, it may be dog food allergies. Studies show 10% of all dog allergies are caused by dog food. Other symptoms include red bumps on the skin, inflamed paw pads, runny nose and loss of hair due to itching. Food allergies occur when the dog’s body believes he’s eaten something dangerous, and his body reacts by releasing histamine, which is what causes the allergic reaction.

Here are the most common dog food allergens:

1. Wheat/gluten allergy
This is the most common food allergies in dogs. The symptoms for the wheat allergy include licking of the feet, wheezing and severe itching with hair loss on parts of the body. If you suspect this in your dog, try a gluten free dog food. There are many varieties available. If the symptoms get better, he’ll need to stay on the gluten free dog food permanently.

2. Egg allergy
Eggs are found in many dog foods and could be the cause of dog food allergies. It’s usually the egg white that the dog reacts to, not the yolk. Egg white allergy symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and hives. If you suspect eggs, read the ingredient list and try another variety without eggs and monitor his reaction. Check with your vet if your dog is having a severe reaction.

3. Beef allergy
Beef is another allergen that can cause dog allergies. If the amino acids in the beef protein are not completely broken down by the digestive system, the body can have an allergic reaction. Common symptoms of a beef allergy are indigestion, ear infections and itchy skin. Luckily, there are many dog foods on the market that don’t include beef. Chicken, lamb and turkey are beef alternatives available in dog food.

4. Soy allergy
A soy allergy has a few different symptoms including itchy and runny eyes, poor coat quality and nausea. There is a specific protein in soy that the dog’s digestive system cannot always breakdown correctly. The dog will then develop antibodies against the soy and the next time he eats it, he will have an allergic response.

5. Fish allergy
Fish allergies can also develop in dogs, and the most common culprit is salmon. Sometimes with fish, it may just be a food intolerance, which is not as serious as an allergy. Fish allergies in dogs cause fatigue, gas, weight loss and sometimes breathing problems. Check the ingredient list if you’ve seen a reaction in him to fish or salmon. There are many alternative dog foods on the market that don’t contain fish and salmon.

Check with your vet if you suspect food allergies. They will sometimes recommend an elimination diet to narrow down the type of allergy. Dog allergies can’t be cured, but they can be managed. Don’t be discouraged! Once the allergen is identified, you can modify his diet and the symptoms will subside and you’ll both be happier!
