A brief guide to alcohol addiction

A brief guide to alcohol addiction

Alcohol addiction, also known as alcoholism, is a disease that affects individuals and their family members.

Alcohol is a legal, controlled substance that lowers anxiety and inhibitions. Alcohol is commonly consumed as a drink in many forms including beer, wine, whiskey, and hard liquor. Some individuals may become addicted to it and require treatment for the same. The key factor to be considered here is that people with alcohol addiction are those individuals who often feel as if they cannot function without alcohol.

Alcoholism is said to exist when these conditions are present:

  • A person drinks huge quantities over an extended period of time.
  • Faces difficulty in cutting down on alcohol.
  • Spends a lot of time buying and drinking alcohol
  • Desires alcohol strongly
  • Alcohol usage results in an inability to fulfill responsibilities and damaged social relationships
  • It also results in social problems, health problems, and creating risky situations.

Unlike drugs, alcohol is widely available and accepted in many cultures and counties. It’s often at the center of social gatherings and closely linked to celebrations and enjoyment.

Common reasons why people drink
People who are addicted to alcohol may give several reasons for their behavior. Some of the most common explanations given for drinking are:

  • Stressful life: Since alcohol is a sedative, drinking it produces feelings of pleasure and relief from stress. However, frequent drinking builds a tolerance, because of which an individual may need to consume more alcohol to achieve the same effect, and ultimately, they may become addicted to alcohol.
  • Pleasure and feel good: Consuming alcohol can provide some people with a break from painful reality and facts. It offers a sense of relief from problematic issues which their mind may be trying to escape.
  • Cope with difficult situations and loss: Sorrowful situations like losing a family member or friend can take a toll on a person emotionally, physically, and mentally. Alcohol helps people forget about stressful worries.
  • Overcome worry: Some people are naturally anxious, causing them to worry about every situation. Drinking lowers an individual’s inhibitions and makes them more comfortable in social situations and events. Over time, though, it can lead to addictive behavior.

Effects of alcohol addiction

Few short-term effects of alcohol abuse are:

  • Slow reaction time
  • Poor reflexes
  • Reduction in brain activity
  • Lowered inhibitions
  • Blurry vision
  • Restlessness

Some of the long term health conditions caused by alcohol are:

  • Brain defects, including Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome
  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes complications
  • Heart problems
  • Vision damage
  • Bone loss

Treatment for alcohol addiction

  • Rehabilitation: Generally, inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab help treat alcoholism. Inpatient rehabs are intensive treatment programs that require a person to check into a facility for a certain time period, usually 30-60 days. Outpatient rehab allows individuals to participate in a recovery program and counseling while continuing with their daily life.
  • Maintenance: The recovery process doesn’t end with the completion of rehab. Long-term support groups, counseling, and other recovery resources are required in this maintenance process.
